Saint Andrews nursing home taking next steps toward replacement facility

21 March 2024

Passamaquoddy Lodge’s Board has been working for more than five years on replacing their facility in the Saint Andrews region and now it can move forward to the next step.

The province in a letter has given support to the board to begin securing funds before formal per-diem negotiations begin.

“Government understands that many aging facilities need upgrades, and we are always interested in meeting with owner-operators to discuss how we can support them in that goal,” said Minister of Social Development, Jill Green

“The Department of Social Development is pleased to continue working with Passamaquoddy Lodge, and once funding is secured, to begin negotiations to develop a costing model for a renewed Passamaquoddy Lodge and Community Care Complex.”

The new complex will be built in a series of residential homes instead of the traditional institutional model. The space will include a community activity hub for seniors, enabling them to receive services at the community level, allowing them to age at home for longer. The complex would also hold space for children, contributing up to 100 additional spots for child care in the community.

“This is great news for all Southwestern New Brunswick, “said Caroline Davies, chair of the development committee. “We realize lots of work still needs to be done but we have hit the ground running, meeting with financial institutions.”

The new facility must be financed by local banks and community organizations as the province covers costs through per-diem rates rather than by major capital contributions.

“I have supported and worked positively with the Passamaquoddy Lodge Development Committee for years and I was pleased that the Premier and I were able to tour the facility recently to see plans for the next stage in Passamaquoddy Lodge’s evolution,” said Minister Responsible for Seniors, Kathy Bockus.

“I am pleased to have determined the next steps with Passamaquoddy Lodge. I have every confidence that the greater community of Saint Andrews will rally around this exciting proposal,” she added.

The Development Committee held two Open Houses in January to build community support.
